Rich Corwin Finishes Second at 2024 PBA50 Regional Players Invitational

Reno, NV. --Rich Corwin of Portland, Oregon, delivered a strong performance at the 2024 PBA50 Regional Players Invitational in Reno, Nevada. After tying for first place in qualifying, Corwin advanced through match play to the championship match, ultimately finishing as the runner-up in the prestigious tournament.

 

After 18 games of qualifying, Corwin tied with Rick Benard of Roanoke, Texas, for first place, both posting a total score of 3796. Chris Warren, a former PBA Tour champion, qualified in third with 3778, while Randy Weiss, the 2024 PBA50 Rookie of the Year, followed closely in fourth with 3777.

 

Other notable bowlers from Oregon and Washington included Blaine Weninger, the PBA50 Northwest Region Player of the Year, who finished 16th; Clyde DeLoach, who finished 18th; Michael Kennedy, who placed 40th; and Russell Hunt, who withdrew after completing 12 games of qualifying.

The field was cut to the top 12 bowlers, who advanced to a single-elimination bracket. As the top qualifier, Corwin earned a bye in the first round and advanced directly to the quarterfinals, where he faced Darryl Bower. Corwin dominated the best-of-five match with scores of 226, 215, and 198 to win in three straight games.

 

In the semifinals, Corwin went up against third-seeded Chris Warren, who had defeated Rick Graham in a five-game quarterfinal match. Corwin struggled in the first game, including a gutter ball in the second frame and a split in the 10th, giving Warren the win. Corwin bounced back in the second game with a near-perfect performance, finishing with a 236 to Warren's 190. In the decisive third game, Corwin struck consistently while Warren faced challenges with splits and open frames. Corwin finished strong, securing a 213-182 victory to move into the championship match.

In the final match, Corwin faced Randy Weiss. Weiss opened the match with steady play, sparing a 4-pin in the first frame and striking in the next two. Corwin started strong with a double but left a 10-pin in the third frame, which he converted for a spare. A split in the fourth frame set Corwin back as Weiss continued to strike and build his lead.

 

Corwin rallied in the middle frames with a three-bagger to cut Weiss's lead to 16 pins but faltered with a six-count in the seventh frame. Weiss capitalized with a swisher strike in the eighth but left a washout in the ninth, keeping the match within reach. Corwin struck in the ninth but left a 2-pin in the 10th frame, finishing with a 209. Weiss, needing only to stay clean, completed the match with a 229, taking the title.  Weiss took home $10,000 for the win and Crowin $5,000 for his runner up performance.
